Exhibition Style Paper Outline

EQ: Is Civilization doomed?

Thesis and Intro Paragraph: Civilization is doomed.

Arguments:
Section 1. We can't stop the collapse - civilization is inherently unsustainable - it can't be reformed into sustainability - definitions of sustainability and civilization - brief history of the spread of genocide and ecocide from this civilization, the metaphor of hte juggernaut (Sources: guns, germs, and steel - Culture of Make Believe, Green History of the World, Ishmael, Savages, Against Civilization, Endgame)
Section 2. Other civilizations have collapsed because of ecological damage and resource depletion (Sources: Collapse by Diamond)
Section 3. Global warming (Sources:Inconvenient Truth - material from film, website, and book).
Section 4. Peak Oil (Sources: Heinberg - book plus film, plus Worldwatch materials, etc)
Section 5. Geopolitical conflict including military spending, the war in Iraq, and the possibility of nuclear war precludes a coordinated cooperative international response to these challenges (Sources: Powerdown, the WRL Pie Chart, Worldwatch summary of military spending)

APV:
Could civilization be reformed to be clean and green - like New Zealand or Sweden?

Significance:
That our own culture is not only doomed, but also destructive, changes the context of our individual lives. It also points to ways of living that might be preferable - lifeways that are sustainable, in connection with the ecosystems of the Earth, and possibly to resistance to the civilization that calls us citizens.
